hey guys

now i know this seems like a silly question but i cant see why its getting so hot. Its a got a genuine koyo radiator which is pretty big, fresh tectaloy coolant and a 12 thermo fan so it should stay nice and cool. but after a few runs on eastern creek wet pan its getting pretty hot. only thing i could think of that it could be is maybe my fan mount blocking too much of the rad orthat the thermostat isn't working properly(am planning on taking it out). Do you guys have any ideas how i could stop it getting so hot?

do not take your thermastat out
do you have aftermarket guages????
mount the fan directly on the rad, piss all that alu sheets off,

if you knew a fabricator, you would get them to make you a shroud that has the fan about 25mm off the rad, as there is a static deadset infront of most fans, so having it mounted 25mm or so off the rad, will allow the fan to work at its best

^^ As he said. Get rid of that alu sheeting and mount with more "suction" (no gaps) to the Rad. A shroud would be best if you dont want to mark the radiator. (Just a note mate, drifting damages cars if you like it or not

Just some basics, but Have you checked that the fan is actually turning on?
What are you using to control the fan? (ie; ECU, thermostat sensor/probe adjuster, etc) What temp does it come on at?
Do you have an oil cooler?


2 10" fans would be better than the 12" in my opinion....

The car is obviously producing more heat when racing, so it will be hotter. I am not sure how the stock gauge is calibrated, ie; what the actual temp is when is rises. A temp gauge would really help....

Take the thermostat out and put it in a saucepan and boil it on the stove... make sure it opens up.

What is your water pump like?

nah man i've just got the standard guages, so knowing what temp its at is a bit of a guessing game. but you can tell when its heating up. yea i dont really want to mount it directly to the rad as it was expensive. hmm may look into getting a fan shroud made up thats spaced off the rad.

yea ill grab it out sometime this week and give that a go. water pump is fresh, put a new one in when i put the motor in.

Just to reiterate what has been said.

-Get a proper temp gauge
-Make a decent fan mount
-Check that thermostat works

Ive done full days on the wetpan and never even had to turn on the thermo fan while driving, just for reference.

bash limitier for 4 minutes(not moving) with alu rad iand it doesnt overheating yours should be fine man, do what everyone has said and you should sort it

haha yea i know drifting wrecks your car, found that out last saturday. yea i know the fan is turning on, i checked when i pulled into the pits. well there isn't much controlling the fan, its just always on She guy who wired up my car didn't put a temperature switch in for the fan. He just wired it so it comes on, on start up. Nah i don't have an oil cooler, am contemplating getting one. Was looking at getting something like this and doing away with my current setup. I know its an ebay one but i cant find any better ones that come with fans as well.Yea i think ill have to grab a temp gauge from work and put it in.

does anyone know if jap ae86 4age thermostats are the same as ae82/92 ones? looking at getting a low temp thermostat for an ae86 but want to make sure its going to fit.

Ok. Point form might be easiest -

1. Fan Controller - Yeah, ok, yours must be hardwired to the ignition. Simple on/off. This is not ideal. Why? Firstly, if the temp is fluctuating so much during driving, the ECU is not operating as efficient as it could. You dont want the fan on, when engine is not up to temp. Engines are doing the most damage on startup and when running cold, and have parts in place to help engines warm up quicker. ie; fan only comes on when NEEDED/hot, and the water thermostat, oil thermostat etc. This is how engines are designed, this is how they should be run. Simple solution, is you can buy a thermo fan controller with thermostat. There are a few variations of type out there. You can buy the complete kit from supercheap for about $55 I think, and they actuall stock a decent brand (Davies Craig). You can easily adjust at what temp you want the fans to come on at.

2. GET A TEMP GAUGE!!!! They are cheap enough, you dont need the best expensive brands, just something to help diagnose and monitor the situation. Win Win win for the gauge!

3. Me personally, I would get a oil cooler. It will make your oil last longer, and keeps general engine temps down when thrashing the car.

4. I am puzzled to why you would want to spent more money, to protect your radiator, which wont look like new in a year anyway. Just chuck 2 10" fans directly on the rad, and be done with it. If it's still overheating after that, then it's obviously the motor...

5. Thermostat - For my cars, I have always used the "Tridon" ones for the AE82 with a 4AGE. I have never had one fail in 10 years......

dont hold me to it but ide get a ae82 thermostat as they had a bigport which is whats in a jap 86,so should be same,shouldnt cost much anyway if you go repco,bursons etc,not on topic but i removed the fuel pump from my jap tank( baffled) took it to repco and part number was same as a ae82 fuel pump,so they probally share a few parts
