solid lifter upgrade 16v 4age.

hey guys,
I've been looking into doing the solid lifter upgrades to my 4age im building.
i know 1szfe fit and are avaliable from toyota but due to time and money constraints, ive been looking into using 1zzfe ones i have laying arround,
they have a 31mm bore as the standard 4age ones are 28mm.
my question is has anyone bored out the lifters to fit larger ones in a 4age.
I should probably mention im an engine reconditioner and have the tools to do all this, just wanted to see if anyone else has done this.

I will have to modify the lifter area anyway to fit my new hektik cams.

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

what are you hoping to achieve from doing that?

I'm using cans with 11mm lif so under bucket ships or solid lifters are needed,
I have lots of these at work so I figured, why not use them.

makes sense to me, you get to use a common bucket and you can do the work yourself. That said I can't say if there is any technical reason why you can't do it. If you do I would love to see a photo of your work.

this should be done by the end of the week or early next week, ive made the program on the cnc at work, and should be pretty easy.

i find it interesting that you would bore a hole out 3mm over 16 holes when you would have bought some shims and machined the top section of the stock buckets and made a shim underbucket from the stock buckets cheap but now you will increase friction of 3mm more diameter over 16 buckets and making the head casting weaker i would like to know how this goes in the long run but modifying the stock buckets to suit shim under would have been the way i would have done it being an engine reconditioner myself

Only real reason was that I didn't think of it. Haha. I did consider the added friction and mass but I figured it would be too much of an issue. And on the plus side the lifters were free.

If you where to modify the original buckets I think you would have to get them rehardened and reground. That is assuming the shape is still round once done. This is because the area under the shim isn't designed to be used as a hard wearing surface. I could be wrong here but I think it would end up being a real hassle to do.

I still think the idea of using the 1ZZ parts is a better bet. Besides I can't imagine there being much of a difference in friction seeing their in an oil bath and it's purely an up and down movement.

bigger O.D on the cam bucket allows more aggressive ramp rates too. plus a lot of 4ages are pretty old and likely to have a lot of wear in the bucket bores. its pretty much win win.

just a quick update, its been a massive head ache!! just because the pilot for out cnc is too short as it had been replaced by a non-oem one. so ive made my own pilot thats longer, and had to "pre cut" the pockets out with our valve seat cutter.
so hopefuly tomorrow ill have some pics and atleast 1 bore done lol. XD
